Last month, Zac Repka, President of the local Rotary Club, and Fatima Ruiz, the adviser of the new Rotaract Club, visited our campus in a series of lunch meetings to recruit individuals interested in creating a Rotaract Club. Rotaract, a sponsored club by Rotary, is a student-run organization on campus that is dedicated to service to the community and building relationships.

The Rotaract Club does a variety of things including mentoring and tutoring children, collecting donated books, organizing camps and outings for people with disabilities, raising funds for medical equipment and disaster relief and creating awareness of AIDS, drug abuse, polio and other issues.

Some of the many benefits that come with club membership include access to certain scholarships, seminars that cover many topics ranging from business ethics to marketing/management and community networking opportunities.

"The purpose of the Rotaract Club here is to provide an avenue for students and young professionals to serve their community," says Repka.

"We want to build a bridge with students via a club that wants to help students", says Ruiz.

Overall, the Rotaract Club sounds like a phenomenal idea to establish here on campus. Students who seek a way to become involved in the community and are otherwise unable due to lack of connections can now find a place among friends to do some very productive things for the community. In return, a slew of benefits and assistance are available to members through the Rotaract Club, sponsoring Rotary Club or even Rotary International.

If you would like to get involved with the organization you may contact Mike Serpa, President of the Rotaract Club, at jobplace@yccd.edu. They would be more than happy to have you, and you can get involved in some really great projects!
